Why FuelEU Maritime?
The FuelEU Maritime Regulation is the central instrument for decarbonizing European shipping. Binding reduction targets for the greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels will apply from January 1, 2025 - a clear roadmap that envisages an 80% reduction by 2050.
Bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane) is a drop-in fuel that can be used immediately and not only meets regulatory requirements, but can also generate additional emission credits.
FuelEU Maritime: Spot prices for subsidized biomethane certificates
FuelEU Maritime has been fully applicable since January 1, 2025 and sets binding reduction targets for the greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used on board. The target pathway starts at 2% in 2025 and rises to 80% by 2050. In conjunction with the EU ETS, this increases the relevance of low-emission biomethane certificates for the maritime industry.
The following chart shows spot price indications for Proofs of Sustainability (PoS) from subsidized feed-in plants. Biomethane proofs from substrates in accordance with Annex IX Part A/B of the Renewable Energy Directive with GHG values of -100, -50 and +5 g CO₂eq/MJare shown . The values shown are well-to-tank values; emissions from bunkering, liquefaction and on-board use are not included. The chart thus represents a market indicator for verifications, not the full FuelEU compliance value of an individual ship.
