Biomethane spot deals: Current prices and market qualities at a glance

The biomethane spot market in Germany has been experiencing dynamic growth for years. Rising prices for biogas fed into the grid, driven by regulatory measures such as the Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III) and a growing interest in bio-LNG and bio-CNG, are shaping the market. Due to the highly dynamic market, more and more spot deals have been concluded for years instead of long-term supply contracts.

Biomethane spot deals offer a short-term supply of certified biomethane and enable energy suppliers, traders and direct customers to react flexibly to market movements. The prices are based on current market developments and can offer attractive entry points compared to long-term supply contracts.

Different qualities and target markets

The categories listed below are among the most traded biomethane qualities. They differ in the substrates used, which also determine the respective target market. In the fuel sector, for example, only biomethane from liquid manure and dung is used, as these substrates enable the highest greenhouse gas reduction.

Biomethane from slurry and manure plants (advanced, RED III-compliant)

  • Produced from residual materials such as slurry or manure
  • Recognized as an advanced biofuel under theEU RED III directive
  • Particularly valuable forTHG quotas and can be traded at a high price

Biomethane from renewable raw materials (Nawaro, non-advanced)

  • Produced from maize, grass or other energy crops

  • Does not meet the criteria for advanced biofuels according to RED III

  • Is frequently used in electricity and heat generation

  • Produced from organic waste or industrial by-products
