Sustainability certification

REDcert - Sustainability certification

The REDcert system is one of the leading sustainability systems for the certification of biomass and biofuels in Europe. Founded in 2010 by key players in the agricultural and biofuel industry, it creates the basis for the implementation of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) - from sustainable biomass production to processing and marketing.

REDcert enables companies along the entire value chain to provide seamless proof that their products are produced in an ecologically sustainable manner and are fully traceable.

Why REDcert certification?

Practical, established and deeply rooted in the German biogas industry - REDcert is the proven choice for companies in the European energy market.

REDcert certification is much more than a legal obligation - it is a strategic advantage for every company along the bioenergy value chain.

  • Recognized throughout Europe - established system with particular strength in German-speaking countries (D-AT-CH)

  • Entire value chain - seamless verification from raw material production, processing and transportation through to energy use

  • RED III conformity - reliable proof of compliance with all current EU sustainability requirements

  • Market access & credibility - a prerequisite for trading biomethane, biofuels and other sustainable energy products

  • Eligibility for subsidies - key to state subsidies, EEG subsidies and biofuel quotas

  • Transparent mass balance system - seamless documentation and traceability of material flows along the supply chain

  • Proof of GHG reduction - proof of greenhouse gas savings in accordance with the requirements of RED III

  • Practical implementation - specially tailored to the requirements of the German and European agricultural and biogas sectors

  • Two system variants - REDcert-EU for the fuel market, REDcert² for other areas of application

Sustainability certification

What is REDcert - and how does it differ from ISCC and SURE?

REDcert was founded in 2010 by key players in the German agricultural and biofuel industry and is particularly practice-oriented and geared towards the requirements of the German-speaking market. In comparison to ISCC (global scope) and SURE (European standardization approach), REDcert scores with its deep roots in the German biogas industry and its lean, practice-oriented process.

  • It is particularly suitable for companies that:
  • are primarily active in the German or European market and market biomass, biogas or biomethane there
  • prefer an established, industry-known certification that is well accepted by customers and authorities in the DACH region
  • use traditional bioenergy feedstocks (energy crops, agricultural residues, biogas, biomethane) and have no need for the extended ISCC categories
